This exceptional guitar is a genuine artifact from the early 1920s, a rare Gibson Army & Navy Special Model GY flat top. Produced between 1918 and 1921 for WWI servicemen, it closely resembles the Gibson L-1 favored by Robert Johnson. Notably, these models feature a wide V-shaped neck designed for durability in wartime, and lack the traditional Gibson logo on the headstock. Instead, the original label inside the sound hole adds character and authenticity to this remarkable survivor.

This guitar offers a distinctive vintage parlor character, producing a unique tone that excels both with slide playing and traditional Spanish style. It responds well to fingerpicks and delivers a loud, punchy sound when played with a pick, reminiscent of a Martin 0-15. The string action is notably low making it ideal for slide techniques and strong rhythm playing in the first position. This is largely due to the flat neck angle characteristic of early models.

Jack White on Jimmy Fallon using a Gibson Army Navy: "It's a beautiful thing I picked up. It's called an Army Navy Special, they made in World War I for soldiers to have on Army bases and in trenches but by the time they finished making them the war was over."
